Featured in this piece is a pre-Prohibition whiskey from Baltimore, Maryland. “Monticello Rye” was first produced by Malcolm Crichton in the 1860s, though he mischievously advertised that the brand originated in the 1780s, decades before he was born. In 1892, Crichton’s whiskey business was sold to two brothers and reestablished as The Monticello Distilling Company. This bottle may date to the company’s first two years under that name, as later advertisements show a different label design and logo. The absence of a Pure Food and Drugs Act notice on the label indicates that the bottle predates 1906.
