Mount Vernon Rye, named after George Washington’s estate but with no official connection, survived Prohibition by selling whiskey for medicinal purposes. During this period, it had to be bottled in clear pint bottles, as seen in this piece, temporarily losing its iconic amber square shape. Originally distilled in Baltimore, Mount Vernon Rye was selected by National Distillers after Prohibition to be a flagship brand promoting Maryland rye whiskey.
