This piece features a bottle of Hoyt’s German Cologne, dating to the late 1800s or early 1900s. Freeman Shedd, the apothecary partner of Eli Hoyt, is credited with the idea of giving away free cologne samples to entice buyers. When this proved costly, Shedd and Hoyt transitioned to advertising cards that were soaked in the scent. Shedd also introduced the concept of offering bottles of the same product in different sizes.
