The early 1900s brandy featured in this piece, Dowdell Brandy was sold by a grocer named N. W. Burchell, as noted on the label. His F Street address appears in multiple business directories from that era. A 1938 article in The Prison Mirror reports the store’s closing after 82 years in operation, stating, “Since Abe Lincoln’s wife began buying at Burchell’s, every White House family has been shopping there.”
