August J. Lohse, the distributor named on this bottle, is listed in a 1900s census as a "Saloon Keeper" located on the corner of 11th & E Streets in Washington, D.C. This small, 4 fl. oz., bottle is referred to as a gill, and was once the standard daily ration of whiskey for American soldiers in the 1800s.
